The city is located in a historic Khanate or administrative district not far from the Caspian Sea, and populated by the Lezghi people and Azeri Turks. Kuba tribal rugs consist of a diverse set of highly detailed, often floral designs that feature a large central medallion and a dark blue, or sky blue field. Colors are rich and saturated, and feature a variety of symbols and decorative motifs.

Rugs from the Kuba region are made from wool, though cotton is also used on rare occasion. Kuba rugs in general are woven with symmetrical.
