Description
Serapi rugs are widely regarded as higher-quality variants of the Heriz family of oriental rugs, which are produced in eastern Azerbaijan. This includes Heriz, Bakshaish, and Serapi designs.
Despite the similarity of the terms, “Serapi” is a design reference, not a locality reference. A Serab rug is an entirely different carpet. The term “Serapi” first appeared in the early 1950’s, and it was probably coined by a rug dealer.
Like Heriz rugs, Serapis feature a concentric medallion format with jutting branches or vines ending in large stylized palmettes, leaves, or flowers, with corner pieces at the periphery of the field. The main border is usually some variant of the vinescroll pattern.
